Our client are looking for an experienced Data Scientist with good knowledge of Pyspark and experience with Pyspark in projects involving big data is essential for the project.

The role is hybrid – remote with occasional visits to either the Newport, South Wales or Fareham offices for meetings only.

Expertise in spatial data analysis would greatly benefit the project, while experience with cloud computing would also be helpful

Scope:

Develop methods to expand our use of UN Global AIS shipping data, with three aims in mind:

Improving the quality and breadth of the ONS’ weekly real-time indicators based on AIS data

Gaining additional insight by linking AIS data with other rich sources of shipping data (e.g. describing the movements of cargo on individual vessels)

Developing reusable capabilities for ad-hoc analysis of AIS shipping data (e.g., to report on the number and nature of vessels passing through critical straits and channels globally)

Assist with maintenance of the current Shipping Faster Indicator’s analytical pipeline.

Mentoring and knowledge sharing within the project team and Data Science Campus.

Approach:

Apply data engineering expertise (inc. Pyspark) and data science techniques to gain insight from AIS and other related data sources, as outlined in the project scope.

Collaborate with colleagues in an Agile methodology, demonstrating incremental progress through two-week sprints.

Report significant changes to statistical outputs and any material issues or limitations with the approach.

Apply relevant data visualisation techniques to communicate findings with impact.

Deliver clear code documentation

Support relevant teams in the publication of statistical indicators.

Data science is an intensely multidisciplinary practice with a continually evolving skill set.

You should be able to demonstrate significant expertise in at least one of the following areas. We do not expect any one person to cover all the skills listed; scores will be awarded based on the breadth and depth of your experience.

Data analytics

Data management/curation – such as the manipulation and analysis of complex, high volume and high-dimensional data, distributed processing, relational and non-relational databases, cloud storage and data management, interoperability and standardisation for data, metadata management, knowledge of UK datasets
