The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) is looking for an Education Coordinator to support our education strategic programmes and our East Midlands and North East England education activities on a part-time or full-time (28-35 hours per week) temporary basis to cover maternity leave.

About the Royal Society of Chemistry:

A not-for-profit organisation with a heritage that spans over 180 years, the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) has an ambitious international vision for the future. Around the world, we invest in the education of future generations of scientists. We raise and maintain standards. We partner with industry and academia, promoting collaboration and innovation. We advise governments on policy, and we promote the talent, information and ideas that lead to great advances in science.

We provide advice, resources, and practical support to learners and educators in schools, colleges, and universities around the world. In the UK, we are the largest non-governmental funder of chemistry education, and we influence government policy to ensure that opportunities to develop skills meet the unique needs of chemistry. Our strategic mission for our education work is to empower communities to offer an excellent chemistry education to all, driving diversity and improving skills in the chemical sciences.

About the role:

As an Education Coordinator for the RSC's Education Strategic Programmes team you will work on our strategic programmes, a majority focus of this role is to support our members in championing chemistry to ensure that young people are clear about the purpose of science and recognise pathways to careers in the chemical sciences. You will also be responsible for ensuring our members are kept up to date with our education work to help engender member pride and showcase opportunities for them to support. You will also support the delivery of key education projects on a local basis across the East Midlands and North East England and engage with our local members to act as advocates for chemistry, showcasing best practice in schools’ engagement activities.

As an organisation we are embracing hybrid working, and homeworking/remote working within the UK could be considered for this role. Applicants should be aware that there is an expectation that employees will occasionally attend our Cambridge and London offices and frequently travel within the North East England and East Midlands region as needed for their role. This role will require extensive travel throughout the region; visiting schools, working with members, meeting stakeholders and attending events. This may involve weekends and non-core working hours.

What we are looking for:
  • A degree in science, preferably in the chemical sciences, or an equivalent qualification, together with evidence of working with schools, ideally with a teaching qualification.
  • An understanding of school level, further and higher education, together with a knowledge of best practice in teaching contexts and careers and the importance of diverse role models.
  • Experience of working with members and/or volunteers.
  • Good project management, communication, team working and presentation skills and experience and the ability to work independently.
  • Experience of stakeholder relationship management.
