Purpose of the job: The Switchgear Design and Development Department is a core engineering facility and is responsible for developing, maintaining and implementing company Standards, providing technical support to internal departments, providing after sales technical support to the Client and developing and testing new switchgear products. Purpose of the job To be responsible to the Switchgear Design and Development Lead Engineer for designated engineering activities involving assisting with switchgear design, development and technical support including liaison with manufacturers, clients and internal production and engineering teams.

Key Accountabilities

  • Assist in the review, with the Switchgear Design and Development Lead Engineer, the company standards as required and make the necessary additions or changes
  • To author and control technical documentation
  • With the Switchgear Design and Development Lead Engineer assist in the development of new company standards and introduce them into the system.
  • With the Switchgear Design and Development Lead Engineer assist in the review of the suppliers market and advise the Switchgear Design and Development Manager on the suitability of the equipment
  • From defined specifications, assist in the design and development of new products and enhancements to existing products
  • Introduction of these new products into Switchgear Applications Engineering, Systems and Production
  • Assist in the provision of technical backup support to all sections of the Switchgear and Sales Application Engineering departments
  • Assist to provide the customer with a reference point from which they can obtain technical post or after sales support
  • With the Switchgear Design and Development Lead Engineer agree a plan for the work allocated and be responsible for the accuracy and content of the defined work
  • To keep up to date with the latest technology and review the manufacturing market for suitable equipment which will improve the companies products
  • At all times adhere to the established company processes and seek the appropriate technical authorisation.
  • To carry out any other reasonable duties requested of them by the Switchgear Design and Development Manager or Switchgear Design and Development Lead Engineer which are within the capabilities of the job holder

The Switchgear Design and Development function is operated by a small team operating internally and externally whose functions are interdependent.

Employment, Educational and Professional Background

  • Working towards degree qualifications or HNC in mechanical or electrical engineering and a completed apprenticeship or some experience in the switchgear industry, dealing with applications and product design
  • 2D and 3D CAD design and drafting experience
  • Some product design experience
  • Some technical report writing experience
