WMG is a vibrant, cutting-edge research institution at the University of Warwick. We currently have a great opportunity for an Engineering/Laboratory Technician to provide technical support for the Advanced Steel Research Centre (ASRC).
This role will focus on hands on running of equipment within the hot metals works of the ASRC. This will focus on the alloy production as part of the Rapid Alloy Production program of work which works to develop new alloys and aiding state of the art metallurgy research. This will involve supporting casting as well as leading the furnace area and rolling activities within the lab. The individual will look after each alloy as it goes through its processing journey ensuring correct data and storage. The candidate will allow support other research staff and student to obtain the best quality and consistence from the equipment under the control of this role.
The individual will need strong time management skills and attention to detail whilst maintaining good health and safety practices. Good enthusiasm, communication skills and interpersonal skills are required, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team. We are looking for someone with an HNC or equivalent qualification in Engineering, who has completed an apprenticeship.

Job Description
Job Purpose
To engage with and provide technical support for the processing of advanced steels for academics, researchers and industrial collaborators, students and other staff within WMG.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. To aid in the effective running of the Rapid Alloy Production suite of equipment in the ASRC. This includes, but exclusive to, casting, rolling, heat treatment, thermomechanical testing. Success in this role relies on good communication within the team as well with the academics and external collaborators involved.
2. To support the development of standard practises and procedures for experimental testing through consultation with academics, industrial partners, students and other WMG staff. To advise both internal and external customers to meet technical specifications and achieve high levels of customer satisfaction.
3. To manage and promote good, safe practise in the furnace and rolling area. Helping users maximise their testing as well as improving the systems of work themselves.
4. To develop safe systems of work for safety but also scientific rigor. This role requires effective data handling as well as attention to detail both practically and organisationally.
5. To assist in the maintenance and continued development of a diverse range of specialist equipment and apparatus, in order to facilitate the research and teaching and to ensure this is done adhering to current legislation and in the most cost-effective manner.
6. To ensure health and safety legislation is adhered to by staff and students utilising WMG teaching and research areas. To provide health and safety guidance and, when required, supervision for those working within the WMG Engineering Facilities and associated laboratories with the use of relevant risk assessments, safe systems of work and COSHH information.
