Job description
We are looking for:

  • Fashion and Textiles Tutor
  • Salary £28,316 to £31,883 per annum

The Role:
The role is to teach our level 2, 3 and foundation course students creative and technical skills in fashion and textiles. You will tutor our students through creative processes using a project-based learning approach.

You will teach students while building skills in research, design development, garment construction, textile and pattern design, printmaking, fashion illustration including digital fashion skills. Our fashion and textiles students progress to local and national universities and some may choose to enter into employment at junior level after their level 3 course.

An understanding and experience of the Creative economy and how fashion and textile specialists work in this industry will be important. We would like you to have relevant industry or freelance experience to help us develop and deliver a curriculum that builds our students knowledge, skills and behaviours so they can build successful careers in the Fashion industry.

You will have a BA Hons in a related topic and a teaching qualification or a willingness to work towards this, you will have a broad range of skills relating to fashion and textiles. You will have good organisational skills and be able to provide pastoral support for fashion students and advise and support students through their career development and planning.

The role will require you to embed and work to the college’s values; working with Integrity, having Ambition to help our learners succeed and being Inclusive to learners and colleagues alike. Ongoing staff training and support is available as part of our professional development for curriculum staff. An interest and passion for continuing professional development in industry and education is essential.

We are currently working with Tom Sherrington on a Teach to Distinction programme of training for Teaching and Learning.
Our UAL level 1,2 and 3 courses ensure students are both academically and practically prepared for work within technically and creatively driven industries. Our Creative study programs offer students pathways in Graphic Design, Fashion & Textiles, Photography, Art & Design and Games Design. Our students regularly take part in employer led projects and competitions to improve their professional skills.

The Creative department sits in a purpose built £9 million creative and digital skills building. This facility houses;

  • Creative teaching spaces for Fashion Design, graphics, games art, digital & 3D design, art, photography and textiles.
  • Digital Design studios.
  • A new media suite, complete with animation and recording studios; radio and TV studio.

‘We are really excited to release this role as it will be key for the continued success of our Fashion courses and teaching our students the most up to date and relevant creative skills they need to progress in today’s design industry. We are eager to attract individuals from the Fashion and textiles industry who have up to date skills and knowledge they can share with our learners. We are planning for our fashion and garment making T level so having a team that have relevant Fashion Industry Experience is sought after. We would also like you to be able to show experience in teaching and learning in FE organisations where possible.

You will join our highly experienced creative teaching team to teach UAL level 2 and 3 Fashion and Textiles while providing pastoral support for our level 3 students supporting their UCAS applications and career development plans. You should have a clear understanding of the design process as well as the creative practical and technical skills involved in the Fashion and textiles industry. These should include skills in textiles, fashion illustration, drawing, textile print and garment construction. Leading students through project-based learning you will be able to guide students to their final point assessments.

This is a highly rewarding role which will see you apply a variety of remote and face to face teaching methods. We welcome applications from industry specialists who have some experience in teaching young people and are keen to continue to develop their teaching skills.

Oldham College is a medium sized general further education college, with a turnover of almost £25m. It has one main campus in the centre of town, and this in the third phases of a £40m redevelopment which began in 2012. Higher education is taught on a second, dedicated campus, a short walk away.
