At Hinkley Point C (HPC), we are building two new nuclear reactors, the first in a new generation of nuclear power stations in the UK. HPC’s reliable low-carbon electricity will help Britain achieve Net Zero and protect the environment from the threat of climate change.


As a Field Engineer, you will take responsibility for activities in the field relating to Construction Surveillance and ensure that HPC Quality needs, targets and expectations are realised.


You will be a staunch advocate of our Nuclear Safety Culture, and help to embed this approach in all processes and activities undertaken on the Project.

This is an on-site role at HPC, we can accommodate flexibility such as part time, off-set day, off-set week or other arrangements in discussion during recruitment. Optional overtime may be offered in planned non- working time.

What you’ll be doing…


  • Checking the Works are constructed in accordance with the contract and notify the Construction Superintendent of non-conformance request requirements.
  • Submitting details of any non-conformance request requirements to assist in the issuing of non-conformance reports.
  • Proactively communicating with other site teams, maintaining good communication links and ensuring surveillance is timely reported.
  • Identifying potential Quality issues before they arrive to enable mitigating actions.
  • Supporting team instructions to take temporary measures to mitigate and keep works safe and within Quality standards. Following up by taking appropriate and proportionate action (e.g. issuing communications, calling meetings) to prevent the halt of works.
  • Ensuring design decisions are not taken “in the field” by EDF Energy or contractors, but are considered and approved via a formal process.
  • Ensuring tasks are developed to quality in accordance with the company’s requirement for health, safety and environment.
  • Developing and maintaining an understanding of construction drawings, construction activities, Quality Control Plans and Quality Inspection Records.
  • Ensuring and that Quality Inspection Records are taken and agreed before Works are covered up.
  • Reviewing Contractor performance against the authorised Quality Control Plan.


Who you are…


Your background may include some of the following:


  • A minimum of HND in a Civil Engineering qualification or equivalent vocational training and experience.
  • Broad knowledge and wide understanding of the building industry, materials, trades methods and legal requirements.
  • Excellent organisation, delegation and communication skills.
  • Proven experience of writing diaries which are accurate, concise and with relevance to the particular form of contract.
  • Proven track record of working within a large construction team.
  • Good attention to detail when checking work and materials.
  • Able to establish appropriate working relationships with contractors.
  • Persuasive and diplomatic whilst remaining independent.
  • Experience in the installation and erection of large Civil Works and Mechanical or Electrical plant is desirable.
  • General understanding of the posts obligations under CDM Regulations – along with an understanding of the document and drawing approvals processes is desirable.


As this position specialises in Concrete Coatings, the following also applies:


  • Minimum qualification requirement: ICorr Protective Coatings Inspector Level 2 or NACE Coating Inspector Level 2
  • Desirable qualification requirement: QRB or CCAQ equivalent (CCAQ Training can be provided by external service provider https://cryogenacademy.co.uk/ )
  • Experience in Concrete Coating application and inspection is also desirable.
