Finance Manager - Commercial Operations - 6M FTC

- 6 Month Fixed Term Contract (230000UZ)


This role is responsible for supporting the Commercial Operations team to deliver multiple elements of the Win in Food Strategic Plan. The job holder will provide support and challenge across a number of projects within Formats and Design, working cross-functionally with Business Stakeholders to deliver well-constructed business cases and post-investment reviews. The job holder will support in the tracking and delivery of benefits through various work streams. The role will also provide Financial Support for Key programs such as the delivery of the Deposit Return Scheme.


What you need to do

  • Support with the delivery of the Sainsbury’s Growth investment initiatives, working closely with Retail Finance, Property, Supply Chain and the Space and Ranging team to ensure appropriate return on investment
  • Ensure close alignment between multiple stakeholders by delivering clear and robust analysis in a timely manner in line with trial and roll-out plans across the business for Growth Investments – with particular focus on our Food First Strategy
  • Attend regular meetings to discuss the prioritisation of capital projects to ensure investments are delivering strong P&L benefits as well as aligning to corporate strategy
  • Ownership of Capital Period End process working closely with Trading Finance and Property to enable accurate accruals and latest view submissions
  • Stepping up to cover the Senior Finance Manager for Commercial Operations
  • Supporting a number of ad hoc projects and various teams as required across Commercial Operations during busy times such as Budget, Corporate Plan etc
  • Provide the lead Finance contact on projects, drawing insights from all areas of finance, ensuring the projects are landed, successfully incorporating the key financial requirements
  • Success in this role will mean being able to deliver timely, robust, and accurate analysis; translating data into valuable business insight, communicating all relevant financial and non-financial information when needed

What you need to know and show

  • Qualified accountant ACCA/CIMA/ACA
  • Strong commercial acumen with a focus on driving excellent financial and commercial performance
  • A proven track record of financial control, but also the ability to develop and maintain such an environment
  • Effective communicator, influencer and challenger with senior stakeholders, including audiences of varying financial and commercial acumen
  • Strong Excel and numerical skills, with an aptitude for turning data into analysis and insight
  • High levels of pace, energy and resilience
  • A self-starter, and a strong team player that can work independently, spotting the areas to focus on and assisting in the decision making process
  • Must have a strong eye for detail and a passion for accuracy
  • Comfortable working with ambiguity

What decisions can I make including budget

Prioritisation of deliverables in line with Business Partner expectation

Working with another C5 colleague to allocate workload appropriately

Day to day management of C4 workload across Commercial Operations

Influence the effective and appropriate use of the Growth Trading Budget


Support we will provide

  • Appropriate ad hoc support from the Senior Finance Manager for Commercial Operations, as well as the wider Commercial Operations Leadership Team
  • Training on the job, Learning Bursts, lunchtime learning sessions and formal CPD training to keep knowledge refreshed
  • Regular 1-2-1s with the Senior Finance Manager for Commercial Operations, including development sessions
