The Universal Content team is responsible for delivering metadata to the BBC’s online and broadcast audience facing products. As well as supporting a number of large programme metadata APIs, we are developing a new metadata distribution system to share content in a robust and reliable manner throughout the BBC.

As a developer in the Universal Content team, you want to write software that is used by many of the BBC’s online products. You are keen to work with developers at all levels and want to bring your own skills and experiences to the role. You enjoy giving and receiving feedback on code and are keen to discuss your thoughts on design and architectural issues. You like learning new programming languages and working on a variety of systems. You also want to test and document your work.

The teams consist of four to eight developers who design and implement code following agile practices including pair programming and test-driven development. Our ways of working are decided by the team from their experiences and best practice in the organisation and industry. The team develops and maintains the code deployment pipeline and sets up and runs the production environments. We work closely with product managers, business analysts and specialist technical support from around the BBC.

The technologies we use evolve as requirements change so we don’t expect you to have experience of all of them. A willingness to learn and contribute your own experiences are more important than the specific skills you have today. We aim to create a supportive learning environment with access to experienced colleagues and mentors, developer guilds, trainer-led courses, self-managed studies and an online book library.

Currently, we work with:

• Java, Python, Clojure and Perl (many of the team started with different language skills)
• AWS cloud technologies such as DynamoDB, RDS, EC2, S3, Lambda
• Kafka streaming platform and event-based systems
• Containers and container management tools like Docker and Kubernetes
• Continuous delivery tools such as Jenkins and AWS Code Pipeline
• Scripting in Bash and Python

More generally databases and data management are central to our work, so any knowledge, experience or interest you have in data modelling, database design, DBMSs or data streaming technologies is likely to be useful. Although we don’t develop frontend user interfaces, we do a lot of REST API design.
