The role

We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in the area of Data Science on an open-ended (“permanent”) contract. We have a large group of staff undertaking research and teaching in AI and Data Science under the auspices of the Intelligent Systems Group (www.bristol.ac.uk/engineering/research/intelligent-systems/) which supports the Faculty’s AI/Data Science Theme (www.bristol.ac.uk/engineering/research/ai-and-data-science/). The University of Bristol has been ranked fifth for research in the UK (REF2021); with Engineering being ranked 6th in the UK. Prof Kate Robson-Brown ,the Director of the Jean Golding Institute (the University’s central hub for data science and data-intensive research), is a member of the department. The department has strong links with the UK National Centre for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (The Alan Turing Institute) and there are around 40 Alan Turing Institute Fellows at the University of Bristol with 5 in the Engineering Mathematics department. What will you be doing?

The postholder will carry out teaching to support our new MSc in Economics with Data Science. This will include lecture courses, personal tutoring, problem classes, laboratories as well as supervising group and individual projects. You will also be expected to collaboratively generate high quality research publications in the leading journals in your field, to apply for research funding, supervise PhD students, and establish a growing international reputation for research within your team. You will be expected to contribute to the effective running of the Department, School and Faculty by undertaking academic leadership roles as specified by the Head of Department.

Candidates are expected to demonstrate how they will positively contribute to an internationally leading research team, continuing a tradition of high-quality research outputs with the potential to secure research funding, including through engagement with industry and other external partners. We especially welcome candidates with interests and experience of applying data science in economics and finance, particularly those who would widen the diversity of the existing research group in Data Science. You should have a good honours degree and a PhD in Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Engineering or a closely related discipline.
