Job Description :

We are currently seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant to join our Nanobody Discovery project, which is funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and aims to develop and expand the use of nanobodies as molecular probes for structural and cell biology applications in the UK. The themes in the Rosalind Franklin Institute (the Franklin) include Structural Biology, Next Generation Chemistry and Correlated Imaging providing opportunities for the innovative application of nanobody technology.

The successful candidate will contribute to the further development of our nanobody technology platform as well as the introduction of new technologies. You will join the Protein Production UK (PPUK) group, a cutting edge national hub for protein sample production, which will develop new, efficient and effective methods of producing specimens for integrated structural biology, as part of the ‘Structural biology’ theme’s remit to revolutionise how samples are produced, stabilised, delivered and transferred.

Responsibilities

You will:

  • Screen nanobody expression libraries by phage display to isolate specific binding proteins.
  • Express, purify and characterise antigen binding of selected nanobodies.
  • Take responsibility for management of samples and data entry into the nanobody database.
  • Present and interpret results at internal lab meetings.
  • Take responsibility with others for ensuring that work in the laboratory is conducted safely and in accordance with local health and safety policies.
  • Participate in and support public engagement by the Franklin.

Selection criteria

Essential:

  • A degree (or equivalent level) in biomedical sciences or related field
  • Previous experience working within a laboratory environment using molecular biology methods.
  • Ability to communicate, learn and collaborate as part of a team.
  • Ability and willingness to learn new methods and skills, and to troubleshoot protocols.
  • Excellent organisational, record keeping and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage your own workload once trained
  • Basic computing skills including using Microsoft office software.

Desirable:

  • Experience with protein purification techniques
  • Experience of mammalian cell culture
  • Experience with FACS methods
