Job overview

The post holder will be an appropriately qualified and experienced individual to support the management of research contracts as member of the Research Contracts Team in Research & Innovation. Reporting to the Research & Innovation Legal Services Manager, this individual will provide legal support and guidance to internal and external service users in the management of research contracts. A strong understanding of the legal considerations regarding clinical research in the NHS and the ability to enter into high level negotiations with research collaborators and sponsors, including pharmaceutical companies, charities and universities, are key qualities required for this post holder.

The Research Contracts manager will provide legal advice to the Trust by facilitating, reviewing and amending as required a wide range of agreements connected to biomedical research carried out at NUH including but not limited to commercial and non-commercial research, Confidentiality Agreements, transfer of human tissue, data protection and service level Agreements. The post-holder will be responsible for the ongoing monitoring, tracking and updating of the research contracts information management systems with all NUH research agreements and will work with the Research & Innovation Legal Services Manager to ensure a robust contracts management system is upheld.

Main duties of the job

Liaise with and negotiate contractual and financial terms on commercial contracts with senior research staff, pharmaceutical companies and Contract Research Organisations (CROs) under the guidance of the Research & Innovation Legal Services Manager.

Work closely with CROs and R&I Facilitators in order to finalise and execute CDAs and clinical trial agreements for commercially hosted studies as efficiently as possible.

Ensure Principal Investigators/research staff are aware whenever possible of their responsibilities under the agreements and of any contractual and/or financial terms relevant to their research

Ensure any Trust obligations under any research and development contract is clearly documented, monitored and followed up accordingly

Be a visible leader of research contracts and ensure delivery of research plans.

Deputise for the Legal Services Manager as appropriate.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Planning and delivery

Ensure appropriate contracts are fully executed for all new projects through adequate review and amendments as required g. consultancy; research funding; data registry; clinical trial; medical device research agreements

Identify and reduce wherever possible any potential liabilities to the Trust under research and development connected contracts.

Work closely with R&I Sponsor team to ensure all appropriate contracts are in place for NUH-Sponsored studies, such as site agreements and Delegation of Responsibilities

Business Development

Provide a centralised point of contact to advise on appropriate contracting, contractual terms and answer contract-related queries, particularly in relation to risk management of clinical trials NUH sponsors, e.g. relevant terms within drug supply agreements, drug distribution agreements, data protection act issues, confidentiality issues, consultancy agreements, indemnities and intellectual property.

Liaise with the UoN Research Innovations Services and Technology Transfer offices to facilitate and support collaborative research efforts.

Ensure that the contracting support offered manages expectations and is able to flex and expand with need and changing demands.

Salary: The quoted salary will be on a pro rata basis for part time workers.
