Job Description :

Job Introduction

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to fulfil a new and unusual role. This role is for a Senior Software Engineer in the BBC Technology Group working across a number of teams.

The BBC has a large number of in house custom built software but as we move forward we are making more use of low code solutions to build lightweight business tools and to connect up different systems and business processes.

We are looking for a senior software engineer to help bridge the gap between low code business tools and our in house custom software. This role will involve helping business teams implement tools and lightweight solutions that meet security criteria and helping them work out what sort of maintenance they need to have in place as well as engaging with teams who manage more complex coding solutions and finding ways to integrate with them, for example using data created during business processes to enhance media assets produced through traditional and digital broadcast practices.

The ideal candidate for this position can be remote but will need to be able to come in to either London or Salford regularly.

Main Responsibilities

As with any role, we would expect you to take some time getting up to speed with our business area, technical landscape and team practices. It may take weeks or months for you to feel that you’ve got a full grasp on things, but we’ll help you to contribute from day one, moving at your pace.

You will be working in a across a number of teams, collaborating with the Team Leads, Business Analysts, Business support teams, Architects and other Engineers to deliver quality solutions.

Over you first year, your focus and responsibilities will grow and develop. In the first 3 months you will be:

  • Learning the BBC Broadcast technical and business domain.
  • Getting up to speed with our AWS microservice & serverless architecture across our existing projects.
  • Working with the business support teams and business analysts to understand where low code is helping people be more efficient.
  • Writing code and tools to support joining low code and engineering products.
  • Supporting teams with good low code practices around security and maintenance.

At 3-6 months (and beyond) you will be:

  • Taking technical ownership of larger pieces of work, and providing valued input into design, planning and estimation future holistic solutions for business problems.
  • Mentoring and supporting engineers and business people on use of low code tools.
  • Learning new technologies and keeping abreast of existing technologies.

Beyond these responsibilities you will have time to focus on self-development, through Innovation Time (10%) and extensive training opportunities (via the BBC Academy).

Are you the right candidate?
  • Working independently and engaging across multiple teams to look for holistic solutions to business problem
  • Utilising the right coding solution for the problem to be solved
  • Knowledge of a low code platform and where it can add value
  • Good knowledge of software process and how to think of total cost of ownership for maintenance
  • Some more traditional coding experience in Python, Java or Scala
  • Experience with AWS solutions and cloud hosting practices

Application & Interview Process

The interview will comprise two parts.

In the first session, we will ask you to explain a business problem that you have solved using technical solutions. We will ask questions around the architecture, the decisions made and your role in them. This will be scored on your ability to effectively communicate the business problem and the solution plus describing choices that you made, as well as your ability to provide answers to follow up questions. As this interview will be conducted remotely, you will want to prepare a diagram to share.

The second session will take a more traditional questions and answers style interview. In this session we will learn more about your experience of the full development lifecycle, the previous projects you have worked on and roles you have had, as well as your approach to team processes.

We may also ask you to complete a technical homework exercise as part of the process.
