Role Description
This role is based within the EPRI International (EI) team and will support three sections of EPRI to provide the student with the broadest experience. The role will work across:
Technology Innovation (TI) – this team leads on a number of thought leadership activities across the institute. Typically analysing complex industry challenges or issues from a number of vantage points and producing insightful papers that help our members and stakeholders better understand the topic and form their own strategies.
International Member & Technical Services – EPRI has members in circa 36 countries with revenues from this group at circa $130m pa. In addition to account management, the team helps our international members get the best technical support, ensuring that our research delivers value. Our international work also involves more 1-2-1 type projects and AID funded work in developing regions.
Energy & Environment Sector – One of our 5 main technical areas that is actively developing our capability in sustainability. Their target in 2023 is learn more about Europe’s progress in this area to help shape EPRI’s future offerings in this space.
3. Key Activities
The candidate will work across all three areas above as priorities and project opportunities arise. It is expected that the candidate will cover the following activities throughout the course of the years’ placement:
  • Review key European sustainability initiatives. Summarise the notable activities including how they are implemented by key organisations, what EPRI can learn from them and how they can inform our sustainability work. Help develop and shape an EPRI service offering.
  • Identify and review key European sustainability focused funding opportunities, consider how EPRI may collaborate with others to deliver research in this area.
  • Keep abreast of global sustainability developments, highlighting the most significant policy developments and extrapolating what that may mean for our membership and technical capability
  • Deliver one TI sponsored white paper on a complex research question. This will involve taking the lead on analysing the question, consulting internal and external stakeholders, drafting content, socialising findings and driving the paper to publication.
  • Support other TI sponsored work as projects allow. taking the lead for allocated sub-activities, for example, producing a slide for the Quarterly insights we deliver on global sustainability.
  • Conduct a global literature review study on a selected topic. This will involve identifying and reviewing relevant global papers on the subject and summarising those for internal stakeholders. (who’s doing what and where?).
  • Work with the International Regional Managers to support them with any ad-hoc requests and initiatives they have that require some strategic thinking leveraging sustainability knowledge.
  • Support the EI Technical lead with his international technical project work. This may involve some direct sustainability work but is likely to be more focused on broader energy system design. Typical projects at the moment include:
o Delivering a suite of USAID funded projects for energy system improvement in Sri Lanka
o Helping Saudi Electric develop an overall R&D roadmap
o Supporting wide ranging African energy system development opportunities
o Working with World Economic Forum to encourage industrial net zero clusters to join their initiative (jointly with EPRI)
o Working with our Climate READi program to answer international questions and provide international perspectives to the workstream leads
o Leading on a UK airport decarbonization study (* to be approved)
With all of the above activities the candidate will be mentored and provided with support to complete the tasks.

The candidate should be:
  • knowledgeable on sustainability practices and policies, global developments, key challenges and key organisations.
  • self-started, confident and capable of working remotely with teams (most of EPRI’s teams are geographically dispersed).
  • analytical and inquisitive in nature, able to breakdown complex questions into key components that can be researched before assembling back into a hypothesis.
  • able to present summaries, solutions or proposals to a wide range of stakeholders using powerpoint and web delivery platforms. For example summarizing a notable global sustainability policy development.
  • a keen follower of international policy development by the main global suitability agencies (eg the EU, IEA, WEC, WEF, COP etc).
  • familiar with energy systems, key technologies and the main challenges the sector faces in delivering a decarbonised future.
  • passionate about the energy transition and motivated to find solutions that deliver a sustainable
