Job description
The intern will work with Science Communication and Engagement specialists in the Research Hub to help tell compelling science stories primarily about health and environment research happening in the Chief Scientist’s Group.

The role holder will work closely with research scientists to turn complex ideas into engaging content for a variety of non-specialist audiences, internally and externally to the Environment Agency. This includes, but isn’t limited to, blogs, tweets and events, as well as the opportunity to develop and test new ideas.

There will be a strong focus on planning and producing communications and engagement content that showcases the organisation’s leading environmental antimicrobial resistance work (https://twitter.com/ChiefScienEA/status/1594619538619998209). However, the role holder will be expected to be able to work flexibly on other ad-hoc topics as necessary.
The team
The Research Hub is a friendly, busy team at the heart of the Chief Scientist’s Group.
Led by Robert Bradburne, Chief Scientist, the Group leads on science, research, analysis and evaluation for the Environment Agency. Our teams identify the evidence needed to support the business of the Environment Agency.
We identify gaps and emerging trends, source the evidence, and translate and communicate it in a compelling way to provide confidence in decisions the organisation takes.
Experience/skills required
While an undergraduate of higher degree in a relevant scientific research area may be useful, it is not compulsory for this role. We welcome students and recent graduates from across the academic spectrum who can demonstrate the following:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to produce high quality content that is clear and engaging for a variety of audiences using a range of media, including social media
  • Interest in the environment and cutting-edge science and research
  • Experience of effective science translation and engagement
  • Enjoy writing and be able to produce and edit written content with ease
  • Good at building relationships
  • Well organised, able to prioritise and manage varying work-loads
  • Be a team player, willing to work collaboratively and help others to achieve team goals. You will also be able to work independently
  • Have IT skills required to work effectively and remotely
Contact and additional information
The Research Hub is a dispersed team with a core in Bristol.

If you would like an informal chat about the role or need support applying, we encourage you to contact the role’s supervisor, Anna Woolman on 07769 586903.

This post will be based in Bristol.

Interviews will take place on MS Teams in March.

The internship will last for up to 16 weeks, starting in July and ending by 31 October at the latest.
