An excellent opportunity for a Manufacturing Technician to join a well-established, exciting and growing Lithium-ion space business. The company designs, manufacturers and qualifies batteries for international space missions on satellites, launchers, and interplanetary vehicles. The company’s customer’s include both national and international space agencies like NASA and European Space Agency as well as working across the commercial market supporting missions that include Earth observation, internet of things satellite constellations and global positioning systems. The position is based in the Culham Science Centre near Abingdon in Oxfordshire and is a job that can truly impact people across the globe

Support assembly operations by troubleshooting, diagnosing and repairing mechanical and electrical defects identified by the production line, functional test, or QC inspection. Document defects and failure of information for evaluation and corrective action. Assist production personnel with the set-up and training of functional test equipment and proper assembly techniques. Support the development and continuous improvement of manufacturing methods, including production flow, tooling, assembly methods, work instructions, and production equipment.

  • Support assembly operations by troubleshooting, diagnosing and repairing mechanical and electrical defects identified by the production line, functional test, or QC inspection.
  • Assist Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering in developing production test equipment design requirements, specifications, and work instructions.
  • Investigate root causes of non-conformance issues; develop and implement corrective actions, and document defects and failure information for evaluation and corrective action.
  • Assist in the development of line layout, prototype equipment, verification, and validation protocols to ensure manufacturing readiness.
  • Perform and assist production line personnel with diagnosis and rework of RMA products.
  • Participate and contribute in continuous improvement activities such as JDI, Kaizen, A3 and PCI.
  • Provide training for production personnel in electrical safety, functional test philosophy, and proactive defect prevention.
  • Prepare and review Engineering Change Orders (ECOs).
  • Ensure test methods and fixtures are optimized for the current manufacturing environments.
  • Execute verification and validation protocols.
  • Assist in testing, data collection and analysis, and report findings to operation teams.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on production equipment and tools.
  • Recommend capital equipment requirements for production, audit, and testing processes, and participate in installations and implementation.
  • Any other duties as required

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years direct technician experience in a manufacturing environment required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with operating internal and external software systems at an advanced level not limited to: Word, Excel, SolidWorks, Visio, graphs, and charts, preparing presentations and using statistical software to analyze and interpret process data.
  • Strong multi-tasking, attention to detail, written, verbal, and presentation skills required.
  • Ability to accurately and thoroughly document processes, procedures, and training documents.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in electrical engineering or equivalent field preferred.
  • Familiarity with product equipment and tools, with technical skills and mechanical aptitude and experience with measurement equipment such as multi-meters, calipers and digital cameras preferred.
  • Technical skills in manufacturing processes and methods including flow, layout, assembly, and production equipment preferred.
  • Working knowledge of alarm systems, and AC and DC electrical currents, and ability to perform tasks associated with all production cells and areas preferred.
  • Basic understanding of Lean manufacturing, ISO quality procedures, mechanical and electrical assembly, and mechanical and electrical testing preferred.
  • Working knowledge of BOMs and ERP/MRP systems (SAP) preferred.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time
  • Must be able to frequently bend; twist; reach; stoop; kneel or crouch
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds/23 kilos on a daily continuous basis. Anything heavier will be done with the assistance of a mechanical device or with the assistance of another employee.
  • Must be able to differentiate colours
  • Risk of Electrical Shock
  • This position is exposed to harmful materials such as lead/fiberglass products. Periodic blood tests are required to measure the level of lead. Precautions are taken by the company/employee to reduce the risk of exposure and help ensure everyones safety.
  • Employees are responsible for wearing the required Personal Protective Equipment in the proper manner at all times
  • Must be able and willing to work overtime
  • Must be able and willing to work varying schedules which may include nights, weekends, and public holidays.
