Job Description :

WE CAN ONLY CONSIDER APPLICATIONS IF THEY FOLLOW THE GUIDANCE PROVIDED BELOW IN THE "HOW TO APPLY" SECTION.

About us

We are a small, independent and values-led publishing house. We love books, and we want to change the conversation around social justice.

We publish upmarket non-fiction, thought-provoking literary fiction, photography, illustrated non-fiction, graphic novels and more. For us, it's less about genre and more about finding the right way to pose the big questions that help us envision a more inclusive, just and equitable world.

We understand that when it comes to our staff, our diversity is our strength. How could it not be?

About you

You love books, and you think that everyone should know what intersectional feminism is all about (for a start).

You are hungry to learn about the publishing industry and you like staying on top of the latest trends related to your role. You’re digitally savvy and have a flair for words and design.

You ask big questions, think outside the box, pitch your ideas and listen to input from your team. You're kind, organised, detail-orientated and a self-starter.

You see failure as an opportunity, and you’re more afraid of being eaten by a shark than saying “I don’t know”.

About your role

We’re back from hiatus and ready to launch our new list. Your role is to spread the word about our books and authors (marketing) and to get others to do the same (publicity).

The exact nature of your role will vary by week, by month and by book. It will also be shaped by you and the kinds of challenges you’d like to tackle next.

Your to-do list will often include:

  • Designing engaging assets for our media channels
  • Creating and timetabling outputs on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook
  • Amplifying third-party buzz around our titles and authors
  • Building and maintaining relationships with book bloggers and review outlets
  • Compiling press and media packs for each new title
  • Coaching authors on building their own social media platforms
  • Inventing a better wheel by bringing new ideas to the table on how we can do our work better.

This post is remote, flexible, part time and expandable in future. It’s especially suitable for those with existing study, freelance or caring commitments.

The fine print

This is a Level 1.5 Post. That means the salary is 1.5 times the National Living Wage (April 2023 Rate). Our base hourly rates are indexed to the National Living Wage and staff receive automatic pay rises each year at above-inflation rates. Your 2023 salary will be £15.63 per hour (unless you're London-based, in which case it will be a bit higher).

Bear with us if the salary explanation seems long-winded. We're committed to #BookJobTransparency and actually paying fair wages in the publishing industry. This is the best way we know how to achieve that.

At present, we’re asking for 4 hours of your time per week. The post is currently funded for 12 months. We envision that this role will both continue and expand significantly over time—so the ideal candidate would have room to take on more work in the medium term.

In our opinion, entry-level posts shouldn't put up barriers to entry such as "previous work experience" requirements; that's the sort of nonsense that gets in the way of a publishing industry that is diverse, equitable and inclusive (read up on #PublishingSoWhite on Twitter for more here...)

Our only "requirements" are that you share our social values and our love of books—and that you cultivate and maintain a learning mindset in work and in life.

How to apply

Please email us your pitch by 1 March 2023 at 09.00 GMT to: jobs [at] redpress.co.uk

We're not going to set any firm ground rules for what your pitch should consist of, but we will say: this role is a lot about pitching our books to the book-selling and book-reading public. As a logical first step, we're asking you to pitch yourself (as a thoughtful and creative human being) for this role and this company. This is your chance to introduce us to your voice, your abilities and your vision for the future. And hopefully, it'll be the most fun you've had applying for a job.

Got questions? Drop a line to: jobs [at] redpress.co.uk. We'll offer up responses, clarifications and other sundry insights via a dedicated Twitter thread.
