We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Software Engineer with extensive knowledge of Actian OpenRoad and/or Actian Ingres database who can contribute to the demanding and vital digital services within DWP.

As part of the role, regular travel may be required to the Newcastle hub.

Job description

As an experienced Actian OpenRoad/Ingres Software Engineer you will:

  • Work within a team for the ongoing development of several key systems.
  • Have a successful track record of enhancing legacy systems and refactoring existing applications to update dependencies and keep them current.
  • Be open to learning new technologies and skills.
  • Work closely with business analysts, technical support colleagues as well as business users to contribute to the ongoing development, support and administration of applications.
  • Implement best-practices to code securely, developing the application to reflect agreed requirements to agreed priorities.
  • Deliver quality software which is easy to maintain.
  • Troubleshoot issues related to the applications – technical and user related.
  • Provide technical support across a number of specific applications.
  • Provide coaching and mentoring to Software Engineer colleagues.

This job role may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in their DWP office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and your office will be your contractual place of work. The number of days that anyone will be able to work at home will be determined primarily by business need but personal circumstances and other relevant circumstances will also be taken into account. If you are successful, any opportunities for hybrid working, including whether a hybrid working arrangement is suitable for you, will be discussed with you prior to you taking up your post.

Salary Information

Salary for this role is from £38,469 (Band min) to £41,480 (Band max).

Where the maximum salary of £41,480 is offered, a Digital Allowance of up to £15,000 per annum is available for exceptional candidates, based on our assessment of your skills and experience.

Our offer to successful candidates will be based on an assessment of your skills and experience as demonstrated at interview.

Existing Civil Servants who secure a new role on lateral transfer should maintain their current salary.

Existing Civil Servants who gain promotion may move to the bottom of the next grade pay scale or 10% increase in salary whichever would be the greater.

  • In depth knowledge of Actian OpenRoad and/or Actian Ingres database.
  • Good knowledge of SQL.
  • Unix scripting experience.
  • Full-stack development of complex changes and enhancements – programming and build.
  • Experience of Unit Testing / Test Driven Design.
  • Carrying out rigorous testing of changes and enhancements.
  • Mentoring of and sharing knowledge with colleagues.

Stage 2: Interview
