Working closely with our partners in the intelligence community, we protect the nation’s people, interests and businesses from threats including serious and organised crime, terrorism, and cyber-attacks.

We’re looking for Software Engineers at all levels, to deliver creative solutions to real-world problems. So, if you’re a problem solver who wants to work with cutting-edge technology, and you’re looking for the chance to make a real contribution towards our national security, a role at GCHQ could be right for you.

As well as fantastic benefits, we’ll support you with access to training, including the opportunity to gain formal qualifications (depending on the role). And no matter at what stage of your career; we’re committed to helping you fill your potential. We’ll invest in you and your skills and the way you like to learn, and you’ll gain lots of experience from doing exciting and often unique work.

We’ll shortly be recruiting for a variety of roles:

Trainee Software Engineers
You’ll be part of an Agile team, tackling real-world problems with a variety of technologies including JavaScript, Java, C++, Node, Python, to name a few. Working with, and learning from experts, you’ll get the opportunity to make a real difference to the safety of the nation, whilst developing a wide range of skills in this entry-level role.

Software Engineers
You’ll work in collaboration with a variety of teams to deliver solutions to real-world problems using various methods, languages, and frameworks, always ensuring best practice. You’ll be comfortable developing software features and ideally have knowledge of Cloud (AWS, Azure, GCP). Plus, you’ll use your experience to contribute to the wider software engineering community.

Senior Software Engineers
Using a range of software engineering methods, you’ll work with and sometimes lead an Agile team tackling real-world problems, whilst making strategic contributions and always ensuring best practice. And whether you’re reviewing pull requests or defining review, branching and deployment strategies, you’ll assist key projects and in doing so, influence the wider engineering community.

Lead Software Engineers
As well as leading an Agile team, you’ll help to shape our ways of working. Collaborating with technical and non-technical customers, you’ll contribute to large-scale projects. Using your extensive experience and your ability to develop the skills of others, you’ll support colleagues with varying levels of experience helping to develop and further their potential.

The application window for our Software Engineer roles will open on Monday 20th March 2023 at 10am.

In the meantime, we encourage:

  • All those from an ethnic minority background
  • Women from any ethnic background

to register their interest in this forthcoming opportunity*

Please note that a registration of interest does not constitute a job application, nor will such registration have any bearing upon the recruitment process itself. Any individuals who register their interest and who decide subsequently to apply for a Software Engineer role will need to complete an application form once the window for applications has opened.

As part of the registration of interest, you will be invited to a series of online events and prior to the campaign going live, you will be invited to an Insight Event where you can find out more about the role. These events will run on:

Insight Events – Wednesday 15 March 2023 (1230pm and 5pm)
Skills Event – Friday 17th March 2023 (1pm)

These events will last for approximately 1 hour.

  • We are confining registrations of interest to these groups only, due to their current under-representation in our workforce. Once the application window has opened, we welcome applications from all candidates, regardless of their ethnic background, gender, disability and/or any other characteristic(s). Please check our nationality eligibility criteria requirements.

All applications will be assessed solely on merit.
