We are pleased to be offering the opportunity for a committed, full time, AfC Band 6 (12 month fixed term contract) Specialist Biomedical Scientist to support the Histopathology service in Nottingham. The successful candidate will join a highly motivated and friendly team who aspire to provide the best possible service to patients across the region as part of Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust Pathology.

This large, busy department provides a full diagnostic Cellular Pathology service to hospitals across Nottingham, including BMS dissection, frozen section production, paraffin wax processing, special staining, diagnostic cytology, renal and Mohs services, immunohistochemistry, paediatric/perinatal pathology, enzyme histochemistry and translational research.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute across all areas of the department on a rotational basis.

Working for our organisation

The department is approved for training by the IBMS/ HCPC and holds UKAS ISO:15189 accreditation.

Working hours are 37.5 hours Monday to Saturday within 8.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. The post holder will be expected to work 5 days a week covering a Monday to Saturday service on a rotational basis. You will be required to work in the Histopathology laboratories on both QMC and City Hospital NUH Campuses.

Informal visits to the department are strongly encouraged.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will be registered with the HCPC and have completed the IBMS Specialist Portfolio or equivalent in Cellular Pathology. Although, some consideration may be given to applicants close to completion of their IBMS Specialist Diploma in Cellular Pathology. Applicants must demonstrate commitment to continuing education and training.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate experience and competency of routine cellular pathology techniques and have experience of specialist techniques such as special stains, immunohistochemistry, renal biopsy attendance, Mohs and dissection (category A-C specimens).

You will have line manager responsibilities for your team including appraisals, training and mentoring. This is a great role for individuals looking to make their first step into a leadership role and you will bring with you excellent communication and facilitation skills to ensure the smooth running of our laboratories on a day to day basis.

Essential criteria

  • State Registered with HCPC
  • Holds or is working towards an IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Cellular Pathology or equivalent
  • Biomedical Science Degree

Desirable criteria

  • Active participation in CPD and personal development

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Able to demonstrate competency in appropriate Cellular Pathology laboratory techniques.
  • Can demonstrate diagnostic laboratory experience post State Registration

Desirable criteria

  • Demonstrates knowledge of advanced techniques, instrumentation and method development

Physical skills

Essential criteria

  • Can demonstrate highly developed physical skills including accurate eye to hand coordination. Able to maintain prolonged concentration for specific tasks e.g. microscopy

Analyctical and judgement skills

Essential criteria

  • Able to make judgements regarding complex facts or situations that require analysis, interpretation and comparison of a range of options. e.g. judgements regarding anomalous results, QA assessments and technical failures
