The role is for the Staff Power Systems Engineer in GE’s Wide Area Monitoring, Protection and Control (WAMPAC) systems Centre of Excellence in Edinburgh.

We work closely with customers to develop innovative solutions to emerging problems, shape and deliver software, design & deploy control schemes, and provide consulting services around power system performance, model validation, tuning of power system stabilizers, and more.

Job Description

Join GE Digital’s Power Systems as a Senior Engineer and play a leading role in our dynamic Power System’s team, within our highly collaborative Wide Area Monitoring, Protection and Control (WAMPAC) systems Centre of Excellence.

As one of our Senior Engineers, you’ll contribute to the research and design within the core WAMPAC products and their interaction with related physical and software systems and operational processes – such as the Transmission and Distribution Management Systems, stability assessment tools and control systems. You’ll also be technical lead on multiple projects providing consulting and delivery services to customers, working closely with them to address power system problems, deliver our solutions, and shape the future of WAMPAC products.

Your profile

  • MSc or PhD in Electrical Engineering or equivalent knowledge and experience, with preferred focus on Power System Dynamics, Transients, Stability and Control
  • You’ll be able to solve problems in a holistic manner and be able to work individually as well as lead a small functional team if required
  • You’ll be required to further develop leadership skills, mentor and coach junior team members
  • Work collaboratively and effectively with other teams
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas is required
    • Matlab/Simulink programming
    • Familiarity with RTDS and OPAL-RT environments and Hardware in the Loop testing
    • Power system analysis using one or more industry standard tools including PSCAD, PSS/E, DigSilent Powerfactory or Powertech DSA Tools
    • Network management products would be beneficial, including GE’s EMS, DMS and WAMS products, as well as familiarity with other SCADA/EMS solutions
    • Power electronics solutions, including simulations and controls
    • Utility and other industrial experience - in particular, experience in operations, planning and/or system analysis

Your responsibilities

  • Technical ownership of projects, working closely with our customers to deliver our WAMPAC solutions including associated training, analysis, workshops and introduction to operational service
  • Leadership of innovation projects in designing and implementing measurement and control solutions in collaboration with customers using WAMPAC technology. Involvement in key strategic solution initiatives with GE
  • Serve as a key link with our customers and their voice within GE – understanding their motivations and requirements, identifying opportunities, and communicating and advocating these to colleagues in our Power Systems, Software Engineering, Project Management and Commercial teams
  • Take an active role in contributing to design and development of core WAMS and Wide Area Protection and Control products – including algorithms; user, functional and performance requirements; simulation and testing
  • Carry out and lead analysis and studies as consultancy and services, involving model-based static and dynamic analysis, and measurement-based studies
  • Knowledge transfer and support for customers in on-going projects, to promote increased utilization of products, gather feedback, and identify and cultivate follow-on business
  • Technical support for sales process, including pre-sales customer presentations and workshops, pilot projects, and engagement on customer challenges
  • Writing technical reports, solution documentation, papers and presentations for conference and journal publications
  • Up to 20% travel for customer interaction and project meetings
