Modern Synthesis Ltd

London, England

Job ID : 6646715132535246514937666e56524149773d3d

Job Description :

ABOUT US

Modern Synthesis is a venture-backed startup crafting the next generation of biomaterials by connecting the dots between biology, material science and design.

We’re on a mission to create sustainable materials which reduce the fashion industry’s dependence on petrochemicals - without sacrificing performance or creativity.

Our first material, which is grown by bacteria, is fully biodegradable and astonishingly strong. You can read more about it on our website.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

We believe that big magic happens when disparate disciplines, perspectives and ideas collide.

As a team of biologists, chemists, designers, engineers, business experts, robots and microbes, we get to witness this magic on a daily basis. From our strong culture of debate (hot takes always welcome ️) to our bi-weekly deep dives, we intentionally embed collaboration and growth into everything we do.

In line with this, we’re committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion within both our organisation and the wider bioeconomy. The way we see it, a diverse and inclusive team is greater than the sum of its parts. It’s 1+1=3, which not only creates a rich work environment, but also makes good business sense.

We hire people, not roles, so we can be flexible on scope.
We strongly encourage you to apply if you think you’re qualified for a portion of this role, and can demonstrate a proven ability to take on new skills and challenges.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, detail driven individual to work closely on our sustainability targets for a 3-6 month internship.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identify key sustainability metrics to help focus and forward the company in its mission, using existing company data and wider resources to prioritise information

  • Measure current impact and develop system to be able to track this on an ongoing basis

  • Identify key areas of improvement and recommend methods of how to improve scores in these areas

  • Work with Chief of Staff on B Corp assessment; using initial assessment data to create action list, prioritise improvements, and gather relevant information

  • Present findings to wider team along with recommendations throughout the internship

ABOUT YOU

We welcome applicants that don’t necessarily tick all the boxes. If you feel that you tick most of them and are willing to learn the rest, we encourage you to apply.

  • No specific educational requirements - we welcome applicants from a variety of academic backgrounds and encourage those from underrepresented socioeconomic groups
  • Proven experience of data collection and analytics
  • A passion for and knowledge of sustainability, the B Corp movement, and the Circular Economy
  • Experience of or an interest in sustainability within the textiles industry
  • Confident in presenting to a wide range of people
  • A self-motivated, creative thinker
  • Willing to learn and not afraid to suggest new ways of doing things
  • Excited to be part of a company that's looking to revolutionise the world of textiles and make real world change

BENEFITS

  • Brand new, dog-friendly office and lab in Southwest London

  • Interdisciplinary team with opportunities for growth and career progression

  • Flexible working, both in terms of working hours and location

  • Tailored development support from world-leading experts and advisors

  • Regular company events

  • Potential to create real, positive impact
