Job ID : 6646715132535250516f585a6e6c644f4b773d3d

Job Description :

Due to continued growth, we are looking for an Ornithologist to join our expanding team in Scotland to assist with ornithological surveys and associated data management and report writing.

This exciting opportunity would be tailored to the right candidate, but it is envisaged that you would be predominantly field-based, playing a key role in the delivery of bird survey and monitoring programmes throughout Scotland. Whilst involved in a range of business sectors, you would have a particular focus on major renewables projects. There would be opportunities to gain and develop experience of a variety of survey types and methodologies, with a range of rare and specially protected species and in some remote and wild landscapes.

With a varied project portfolio across Scotland, the position could be based out of our Stirling, Edinburgh or Glasgow offices, however with a cluster of projects in the north of Scotland, we would be interested to hear from candidates based in the Inverness area (and wider region) who we would consider for a remote working position.

SLR's Ecology Team has a real passion for what we do and with over 70 experienced professionals (including 15 based in Scotland), you would be joining a team that takes pride in providing high quality advice and ecological services to our clients. Our Ornithology service offering is well established and you would join a supportive and collaborative team of experienced ornithology professionals.

The role

Duties will include:
  • Assisting with and leading on ornithology surveys, following a range of survey methodologies and techniques.
  • Keeping accurate field notes (including in digital format), in accordance with the principles of scientific data collection, and handling, recording and storing data effectively.
  • Taking personal responsibility for your health and safety whilst at work, learning SLR’s procedures and conducting your work in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Recording time and tasks accurately on SLR’s project management software and understanding the commercial nature of consultancy projects.
  • Data analysis and presentation, desk-based study and collating relevant available data and drafting baseline technical reports.
  • Undertaking other survey types as appropriate to your skill set e.g. water vole and otter, badger, bats, habitats etc.

Due to the nature of client sites and survey types, the position will involve remote working and some out-of-hours work.

About us

SLR are global leaders in environmental and advisory solutions helping our clients achieve their sustainability goals. We are a consultancy with over 2400+ employees across 6 regions – including over 850 staff across Europe. Alongside 25 day’s annual leave, SLR offer flexible, agile and hybrid working which enables staff to tailor hours worked around core hours, and our family friendly policies help balance the needs of professional and family life.

About you

You should have:
  • BSc Ecology, Biological Science or equivalent (MSc desirable), and eligible for Qualifying or Associate CIEEM membership;
  • Excellent bird identification skills and the ability to demonstrate experience in a range of ornithology survey techniques (e.g. vantage points, moorland breeding birds, raptors) across a broad range of habitats;
  • The ability to carry out tasks in the field to the required standard, without direct supervision;
  • An understanding of scientific data collection methods and an aptitude for accurate and clear recording and storage of data;
  • Experience of working and navigating safely in remote upland environments, across all seasons;
  • A good understanding of wildlife legislation and survey guidance and the conservation status of UK bird species;
  • Experience in the use of GIS software (desirable);
  • Any survey licences for protected species would be an advantage.

Due to the nature of our work a full UK driving license is essential.
