Job Description :

This role involves supporting the Deputy Director of Research & Innovation to develop and maintain KMPT’s research infrastructure whilst ensuring compliance with robust processes based on the necessary governance and regulatory requirements to local and national standards with specific focus on ensuring the processes and quality of our sponsored research.

In addition the post holder will act as a key member of the R&I Senior Leadership team.

The post holder will also play a key role in supporting and deputising for the Director and Deputy of R&I in the implementation of the Trust Research & Innovation Strategy.

The post holder will maintain close links with Chief Investigators, local universities, and the Clinical Research Network; Kent Surrey Sussex to ensure continued delivery of clinical research studies.

Using their highly developed specialist knowledge of research and development and underpinned by theory and experience the post holder is expected to deal with highly complex, sensitive or contentious information; agreement or cooperation required; present complex, sensitive or contentious information to large groups.

They will need to plan and organise a broad range of complex activities and adjust plans where research targets are not met.

Key Result Areas.

Policies
1. To develop, implement, communicate and monitor Trust wide policies and procedures to ensure transparent, standardised and robust systems for governance and R&D approval.
2. To develop, implement and monitor Research Support Services policies and procedures to facilitate the delivery of governance and approval in line with national and local standards and time-specific targets for delivery.
3. To ensure researchers are made fully aware of Trust wide policies and procedures for research governance and approval. This will include ensuring they are fully aware of their responsibilities (e.g. financial governance and reporting) in line with national and local requirements (e.g.UK Policy Framework for Health and Social Care Researchand relevant legislation).
4. To deliver support and training to researchers (e.g. governance, IRAS and GCP training) undertaking Trust-based research as appropriate

Research & Development Strategy
1. Analyse and report on data on research activity and present to relevant internal and external groups.
2. Support the development of a strong research culture in the Trust by working with the Director and Deputy Director of Research & Innovation to implement the Trust Research strategy and stimulate high quality research from both staff and service users.
3. To support the Director of R&I/ Clinical Lead in preparing reports, compiling data and information for presentation to the Trust Board.
4. To support the Director of R&I / Deputy Director in the implementation of the Trust Research Strategy and monitoring of performance objectives.
5. Ensure the teams are horizon scanning to look to bring additional funding and new research studies, particularly NIHR Portfolio studies.
6. To work with the Deputy Director of R&I to develop and maintain the Trust’s research infrastructure to support, promote and organise patient recruitment, as well as providing research support and information for research staff, patients, volunteers and relatives as appropriate.

Research Set Up & Governance

Oversee that research governance processes are implemented to a high standard.
1. Overall responsibility for feasibility and set processes for all new NIHR Portfolio studies.
2. To manage and oversee the use of IT systems for the approval and monitoring of research projects (e.g. NIHR information systems, EDGE database and NIHR CSP system) and to ensure that studies meet required timelines for approval and recruitment.
3. To monitor and audit research activity with ongoing review of systems and policies to ensure national research governance requirements are met.
4. To develop close working relationships and communication with research active staff, clinical (e.g. pharmacy and pathology) and non-clinical departments (e.g. HR and finance) to facilitate and support the delivery of research projects.
5. To work closely with the Clinical Research Network: Kent Surrey Sussex (CRN: KSS) to help meet CRN business objectives (e.g. patient accrual targets and reporting).
6. To support the ongoing implementation of any new NIHR schemes and/or regulatory requirements from bodies such as from the Health Research Authority Approvals (HRA)
7. To hold an overview of the R&D life cycle for all studies across the organisation which involves offering support in the early stages of design (i.e. completing IRAS forms), to completing risk plans, managing the approvals process, monitoring research activity, conducting audits and ensuring effective dissemination plans. Through consistent communication with researchers the R&D Manager will maintain an accurate database of research across the organisation.

Management

The post holder will directly line manage around 3 people with several others to oversee.
1. With support from the Deputy Director of R&I, have responsibility for the operational management of the Trust’s R&I Department and associated staff members.
2. Act as deputy for the Deputy Director of R&I or Clinical Research Lead as required and support their roles
3. Lead on staff recruitment, including authoring business cases, candidate shortlisting and leading interviews.
4. Set clear aims, objectives and outcomes for team members
5. Support, involve, and develop staff, Lead Trust-wide initiatives and projects, as determined by the Director and Deputy Director of R&I .
